Having worked on countless projects, Kathleen has showcased her talents for such clients as Disney, Green Day, Microsoft, Sony, and Visa. As if working with directors such as Oliver Stone, Nora Ephron, and Todd Haynes wasn’t enough, Kathleen decided to further her film education. While earning a masters degree at Art Center College of Design, Kathleen was the recipient of a CLIO Award, Young Director Award at Cannes, multiple ADDYs, and an AICP Award.
“Whether you are introduced in person or speak with her for the first time on the phone Kathleen’s down to earth personality, as well as her sincerity, immediately shines through,” Hugh Bacher, our Executive Producer, had to say, “I think when directors have this intrinsic trait there is a balance between their creative vision and the collaboration with agency and client that is so critical. I have no doubt Kathleen is going to win fans with her film, that she is a pleasure to work with is a wonderful bonus!”
Kathleen started directing her own spec commercials while she was attending the Art Center College of Design. Although, with a limited student budget there were often challenges to getting everything she dreamed up. One of the pieces she was most proud of was her Kia Soul “Funeral” spot. Even with weather issues Kathleen still got every shot that she boarded. It was this spot that she entered at Cannes. That was when our Managing Director, Mark Thomas, first became aware of her.
“When I attended the YDA show at Cannes this past summer, the Kia spot that Kathleen had entered (and won with) struck me as the one that received both the most laughs and applause from the audience.” Thomas continued, “funny is funny, and as we got to know her, and her work, the passion she has for all of this became quite clear…our sense is that her take on the world is something creatives will warm to. She gets it, and we think it’s going to be a lot of fun introducing her work.”
One of Kathleen’s favorite parts of directing is getting to meet so many eager performers and watching them take on the role. “Many times, they bring something better than I was envisioning! But above all, there’s nothing like watching an idea come to life. The satisfaction I feel at the end of the shoot is unmatched – that as a team, we transformed a concept into a product. I really love seeing all the elements gradually come together – from first spotting the right location to discovering the perfect piece of music.”
Growing up in the Midwest, Kathleen was forever determined to stay behind the camera. The endless hours of creating paid off when her artwork was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. She furthered her ambitions by studying fine art at the University of Wisconsin and Slade School of Fine Art.
When Kathleen landed her first job, which consisted of duties such as smiling and clapping, on the Late Show with David Letterman, she thought she’d reached a career high. But before long, she decided to fuse her love of entertainment and design. Thus, a career in the art department was born. However, Kathleen soon realized that if she was going to continue to be envious of the director’s job, she better give her self a try.
When asked what drew her to TWC Kathleen replied, “I really admire Mark’s commitment to discovering and developing new talent. He has a proven record of launching many stellar careers. I’m extremely grateful to be joining such a distinguished group of storytellers…comedic and otherwise.”
